What is a GPS Log Book?

GPS Log Book is an automatic trip recorder that records the position, speed and other data of your vehicle so that the mileage of the vehicle can be accurately tracked.

How does it work?

The GPS Log Book device receives your latitude and longitude from GPS satellites as you travel. These points are stored in memory and then uploaded to the GPS Log Book server. Once the trips have been uploaded, they are processed and the vehicle’s trips are created. The user has the ability to label zones and mark them as either business or personal travel.

Are GPS Log Book devices compatible with all makes of vehicles?

The GPS Log Book Classic device has been tested in all major makes and models of vehicles in South Africa.

The new GPS Log Book Live requires an OBDII port. All passenger vehicles sold in Europe after 1995 are legally required to have an OBDII port. The best source of information about the location of your OBDII port is Google. Try “Opel Astra 1998 OBDII location”. Once you locate the port, it’s really easy to plug it in. It will stay there securely until you unplug it.

In some rare cases, the device will extend into the driver’s footwell and disturb the driver. The device is 7cm in length. In these cases, GPS Log Book will refund the buyer.

What is the warranty on the device?

There is a one-year limited warranty on the GPS Log Book device from the date of purchase.

The one-year warranty guarantees the purchaser that the GPS Log Book device that they purchased may be returned within the warranty period if found to be faulty or not working in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.

How do I install the device?

The GPS Log Book Classic device is plugged into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter/12V power socket.

The GPS Log Book LIVE device is plugged into your vehicle’s OBDII port, which is usually located right under your dashboard.

Is there a subscription fee associated with GPS Log Book?

GPS Log Book Classic comes with the first year of subscription included, after that a subscription fee of R360 per year is payable.

GPS Log Book LiVE has a monthly subscription of R112 per month.

Will the device affect the performance of my car battery?

The GPS Log Book device uses a very small amount of power from the car battery and will not affect the performance of your vehicle.

Are GPS Log Book devices heat-sensitive?

The GPS Log Book device is able to withstand temperatures that a car would experience during typical use, including being left in the sun, or in the cold overnight.

What are the minimum PC requirements for the LiVE device?

How do I claim my business travel from SARS?
  1. After syncing your device, go to the Trips Page and check that your trips are correctly assigned as either business or private.
  2. Navigate to the LogBooks Page and create a new Log Book. Select existing odometer readings for the start and end dates of the logbook OR create new readings by clicking on the plus icon.
  3. Ensure all your vehicle-related expenses have been captured.
  4. Download the Log Book reports: Business vs Private, Detail or Summary.
  5. Use the reports to fill out your SARS IRP12 form and file with SARS to receive your rebate.
What if the cigarette lighter/12V power socket is in the armrest of my car?

The GPS Log Book has a high sensitivity GPS, so provided the armrest is not shielded with metal it should perform sufficiently.

What if the cigarette lighter/12V power socket is already being used?

You would need to purchase a cigarette lighter/12V expansion/splitter socket.
